First Congressional District (VA-1) - The Basics

The First Congressional District of Virgnia was recently redrawn by the Republican-controlled Virginia legislature. Changes include the addition of a large part of Fauquier county, the loss of half of Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties (which are now part of VA-7), and a few other changes. The following map provides a general picture of the boundaries of the district:

The district is currently represented by two-term incumbent Republican Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis from Gloucester. Davis faced no Democratic challenger in 2002 and won with 95% of the vote. Various sources report Carl Wolfe as a Democratic challenger to Davis, although he does not appear to have a campaign Web site up yet.

Voter turnout for the Democratic Presidential primary in CD-1 was 8.52%, slightly lower than the state average. Dean won 5.85% of the vote overall in CD-1, running strongest in Lancaster County (8.1%), King & Queen County (8.3%), Fredricksburg City (8.3%), and Williamsburg City (9.8%).
