Democracy for Virginia is delighted to announce that Al Weed has been chosen for the Democracy for America Dean Dozen this week.
Al Weed is the first candidate from Virginia to be honored with selection to the Dean Dozen.
Grassroots supporters and DFA Meetups throughout Virginia had advocated for the selection of Al Weed to the Dean Dozen, and we are now eager to brainstorm ways in which supporters around the entire state can be of assistance to Al Weed's campaign. Although we will be working for Democratic candidates in our own CD's around the state, this is our first opportunity since the Dean campaign to unify behind one candidate.
We'd like to come up with solid ideas about how we can support Al Weed before the next DFA Meetup on August 4. Please share your ideas in the comments section!
Al Weed has a chance to win in the 5th if we put to use all of the skills we learned as Dean people. I look forward to hearing from others around the state who do not have an active campaign. Email me if you can help!

Please, please....people in the 6th District, where we do not have a candidate, the 5th is close by (part of Bedford, for example). On July 31, there will be a grand opening of the Bedford City headquarters. You can volunteer to work there, to canvass for Al Weed, contribute to Al Weed. Come on, 6th, we need to help retire Virgil Goode!

I second Elaine's comment. Here in the Roanoke Valley, we're very close to Bedford and Franklin Counties, and we're within an easy drive of Danville, Martinsville, Henry County.
Sat., 7/24, noon-5:00 pm, Bedford City/County Dem picnic at Liberty Lake Park. Great opportunity to meet Al as well as the Bedford folks we can work with for leafleting, canvassing, and working in the Bedford campaign HQ. It's a potluck, so bring a dish.
Mon., 7/26, 7:30 pm, Ippy's in Rocky Mount for convention watching event. Light food and cash bar.
Sat., 7/31, 11:00 am, Grand opening of Bedford campaign HQ: 110 S. Bridge St. in Bedford City. Again, a good opportunity to meet Al and others we can work with in Bedford.
Anyone in the Roanoke Valley who wants to get involved is welcome to contact me at [email protected].
Let's get rid of Virgil in 2004, Goodlatte in 2006!

Will anybody EVER run against Goodlatte?
Posted by: Bo | July 21, 2004 at 08:40 AM
If we all work hard and get Al Weed elected, the chances of having a candidate against Goodlatte next time go up exponentially!
By the way, thanks to all of the DFA efforts to make Goodlatte "squirm" and his last town meetings. I am sure he has never been confronted by such pointed questioning before. We need to keep that up for the next two years, also.
Other things that will help for the next election cycle would be negative letters to the editor about Goodlatte and opposition research to uncover his weaknesses.

This recent commentary by Virgil Goode illustrates his complacency. He attributes Warner's victory in 2001 to funding (not Jim Gilmore's wretched performance as Governor) and mentions "values" as the reason Bush will take the 5th District in November, as opposed to accomplishments.
Perhaps it's time to ask Republicans why mediocrities like Goode and Bush are entitled to their votes.
